Pruning Plants
"When and How Much?"

Pruning plants is one of the critical elements to having successful garden plants. Doing it wisely and at the right time will always yield substantial results.

And don't worry, you are not "killing" your plant when you do it. Actually, you are helping it survive and grow to its fullest potential. It only seems wrong to cut something off, because we cannot see the immediate benefit.

In general, annuals need their old, spent flowers removed (deadheaded) so that they may put their energy into more flowers, not seed.

Perennials may have their flower stalks cut down to the ground in order to force another set of blooms.

Woody plants should be pruned to improve shape, but may also be pruned to control height and spread. In general, most shrubs may be pruned right after flowering.

Trees should never be topped. This practice damages roots and directly influences the health of the tree. Whatever you do, follow these simple steps and if in doubt, call the experts.
