Perennials
Manager... Looking for a bold and luscious evergreen? Got a dull spot in your yard?
Look no further... we want to introduce to you the Heuchera ‘Southern Comfort’.
Never have a dull moment again with this great fall evergreen perennial that has color changing foliage from cinnamon peach to burnish copper then to amber!
Plant in rows or odd groups for a dramatic statement.
Hint: Other great Fall display evergreens in stock include Euphorbia, Hebe, Stello d’oro Daylily and a large assortment of Evergreen Carex Grasses (pictured to right).
Also, be sure to check out Gailardia.
These long blooming spectacular orange, red & yellow mixed flowers are also drought tolerant AND attract butterflies. What a way to spice things up this fall!
Hint: More spectacular fall butterfly attracting perennials in stock now include Rhudbeckia, Echinacea, and Canna.
Tip: Now is a great time to start collecting any remaining or budding seed pods for propagating plants.
Simply dry the pods and sprinkle the seeds into shallow rows or dirt mounds for even more great perennials come next spring.
Also be sure to stake tall flowers to keep them from blowing over in fall winds.
Hint: The perennial manager has NEW, FRESH FALL COLOR coming soon. Keep an eye out for evergreens, heucheras, euphorbias, grasses and ready to go planted Fall Magic Containers.

the Jackson Perkins brand. Hopefully it can be solved in the near
future.

rights from Jackson Perkins to sell the roses that are ready for
this year. Nobody knows what will happen to the remaining younger roses
at this time.
The good news is that we can help you. If you Pre-order Roses, pay for them now we are in a position to offer 20% off the retail price! Here is a list of the 2011 roses available for ordering.
Tree
& Shrub
Manager...
September & FALL are absolutely the best time to PLANT large shrubs & trees!
Now
that the weather is starting to get a bit milder, start thinking about
those remaining large items you want for your yard. Cooler conditions
make for better transplanting of trees and shrubs whether you purchase
them from the store or do it from stock within your yard.
Planting now still ensures plenty of time for lots of growing roots to become established.
We now have in some new varieties of Heather. Two gorgeous beauties include:
Calluna vulgaris 'Firefly'
is deer resistant and has crimson flowers that top terra-cotta
colored foliage which turns brick red in winter.
'Firefly' blooms from
August into September.
Calluna vulgaris 'H.E. Beale' is also an evergreen and deer resistant.
It has Dark green
foliage with mounding soft double pink flowers on long spikes. 'H.E. Beale' blooms late summer or early fall.
It is great as a cut flower!
Hint: We still have an amazing selection of Clematis vines who love cooler roots and transplant days.
You can still find a large amount of Star Jasmine vines which are in bloom now.
Tip: Use bare spots this fall as an opportunity to put in some evergreen shrubs which will provide interest year round.
There are so many kinds to choose from including groundcovers, short & round, tall & conical, and even huge evergreen trees!
Hardgoods
Manager... The Bulb Buyer wants Johnson Brothers’ customers to know that our Spring-flowering Bulbs are on their way!
We expect the fall-blooming Giant Crocus, as well as the fall-blooming Saffron Crocus and re-blooming, Bearded Iris to arrive any day now.
The
Daffodils, Tulips, Ornamental Onions, Foxtail Lilies, Checker Lilies
and Dutch & Dwarf Iris are set to arrive before mid-September.
Bulbs to keep an eye out for are: …and of course, we’ll have sacks of Daffodils available for sale or purchase individually.
Remember when purchasing bulbs, the size of the bulb is directly correlated to the size of the flower yet to come in spring.
Houseplants Manager...
Clean houseplants, check for insects, and repot and fertilize if necessary; then bring them indoors.
Tip: Try
adjusting your outdoor houseplants for the indoor dry air by leaving
them out during warm days and pulling them in at night until the
temperatures are too cool for daytime hours.
Fertilizer
&
Pest Control... Plants like people need the right nutrients to grow!
September
is a GREAT time to plant, whether it be annuals, perennials, shrubs or
trees. As always, Johnson Brothers wants to see our customers
plants thrive. The best way to do this is to plant on cool
morning or afternoons. Then water deep for a long time, but not
necessarily everyday unless the plant needs it. We would also like to offer a trick to get your plant thriving in almost any condition... especially now as the temperatures start to cool...Fertilome rooting stimulator (pictured).
We use this in our own gardens, plantings, transplants, mixed containers & color bowls.
We believe in its power to prevent translant shock and provide the
necessary nutrients to get your plants root system strong and
established, ready for any rough winter months ahead. It could be the difference between a harsh winter survivor or a stressed, diseased plant.
Tip:
Apply parasitic nematodes to moist soil beneath rhododendrons and
azaleas that show root weevil damage (notched leaves). We carry 7
million for $19.99. Yes, 7 million!
*Note:
At Johnson Brothers we always insist customers use proper protection
when using any fertilizer or pesticide, be it conventional or organic.
Remember more IS NOT better when it comes to fertilizers and pesticides!
