Perennials & Herbs...

hellebore-rosemary

Hellebores are one of our favorite plants.

They bloom during the greyest of days, are evergreen, deer resistant, blooms last a long time (up to 4 months!) and prefer shady, woodland gardens.

They are also very hardy, down to -30 degrees F!

The Helleborus 'Rosemary' (pictured right), has very large, pale pink blooms that open from rose-pink buds and mature to a dark rosy-chartreuse color

hellebore

Another stand-out is the Helleborus niger 'Jacob'

This premier variety from the Helleborus Gold Collection ® features upright facing, slightly fragrant, single pure white blooms.

These blooms mature to pale green-rose above beautiful dark foliage.

The planter to the left is a mixed winter planter featuring the 'Jacob' Hellebore.

Speaking of foliage, check out 'Pink Frost' and 'Silver Dollar' Hellebore for year-round beauty.

'Pink Frost' (pictured below left) has silvery-pink blooms and foliage with a silver sheen, while 'Silver Dollar' (pictured below right) has white blooms from late winter into spring and striking silver foliage.

Again, very hardy to -30 degrees F and both have all of the other attributes that make Hellebores a must-have!

Trees & Shrubs...Winter Interest Plants

When the weather is unpleasant it's nice to have plants in the landscape that can warm our spirits and excite us about the coming spring.

Camellias (fall/winter blooming) are still flowering and the spring blooming ones are just starting. They feature gorgeous colors and long lasting bloom times.

Dogwoods shrub forms provide great vertical accent with stems in orange, yellow, and red. The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood provides clusters of yellow star like flowers in February.

Witchhazels and Winterhazels (Hammammalis 'Westerplate' pictured below left) provide winter blooms and fragrance when few others are in bloom. In stock now.

Forsythia (pictured above right) and Quince are considered by many as harbingers of spring with their showy floral display.

daphne

Winter Daphne provides a fragrance that is second to none. Try cutting some budded branches of many of the above shrubs and bring them indoors to enjoy.

Natural color and fragrance brighten the darkest of winter days!

And as with all good landscapes, don't forget the early blooming annuals, perennials, and bulbs.

Happy gardening and Happy New Year!
