Fertilizing plants is key to a long, productive growing season. All garden plants and living material need nutrients to survive. Just like humans, plants need supplements for optimum health.
There are many different types of fertilizers, which are formulated for different types of plants (e.g. fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees, etc.). There are also fertilizers, which are intended for general purpose use.
The directions for use of each fertilizer will be on the package. In general, herbaceous plants (non-woody) need more fertilization than woody plants.
Annual bedding plants need the extra energy to bloom all summer, so they need more fertilizer than nearly any other type of plant. Perennials should be fertilized when growth is active.
Most woody ornamentals do not need any fertilizer during the first year they are in the ground (though root stimulator applied at planting, according to package directions, is highly recommended).
After the first year, they usually only need one fertilizer application per year. Trees, shrubs & vines do best with a "slow release" fertilizer, such as Osmocote or Apex.
